Runners and walkers of all experience levels are invited to come see the magic of the Holiday Festival of Lights up close! Held on Nov. 8 and 9, the festival’s Fun Run and Walk is the best way to get a sneak peek of this year’s event at James Island County Park.
This two-mile, non-competitive event is offered on two nights before the festival’s opening – Wednesday, Nov. 8 and Thursday, Nov. 9 – and is now open for registration at HolidayFestivalofLights.com.
Much of the Holiday Festival of Lights is normally seen from a vehicle, so the Fun Run and Walk is a unique way to see the entire light show up close. Attendees will get a preview of the festival’s 700+ illuminated displays and amenities, including gift shops, marshmallow roasting, train and carousel rides, and much more.
Advance registration is required for the Fun Run and Walk, and interested participants are encouraged to register now before it sells out. Register by phone at 843-795-4386 or online at CharlestonCountyParks.com by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Race fees are $12. Rates increase to $15 per person after Nov. 7 (ages 3 and up). Move It Pass holders get a discounted rate of $10 per ticket. Ages 2 and under are free, but will still need a ticket to gain entry into the park. This is a wheelchair and stroller-friendly course. Socialized dogs are welcomed on short, non-retractable leashes. Retractable leashes, bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades and scooters are not permitted.
All participants must be pre-registered and have an admission ticket (not receipt) to enter the park. There will be no on-site ticket sales. James Island County Park will close to traffic at 6:30 p.m., so participants are encouraged to arrive early. The park will reopen to traffic at approximately 8:30 p.m.
New this year is a pre-event training program specifically for people with disabilities who wish to take part in the Fun Run, as part of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission’s (CCPRC) AccessABILITY program. During the Adaptive Holiday Fun Run Training program, participants are invited to run, walk or roll on paved trails while building endurance through structured physical activity goals. Distance will gradually be increased, with the program culminating with participation in the Fun Run on Nov. 8. The program is held on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning Oct. 9.
