James Island build for Marine Corps veteran by Sea Island Habitat for Humanity

by Louis Kines

This year’s Veterans Day weekend was extra special for one particular Marine Corps Veteran: Tonya Mitchell. Tonya recently qualified to own a Habitat home.

For two days on November 10 & 11, she was joined on her home’s construction site by veterans and active duty military from up and down the East Coast, for Sea Island Habitat’s first-ever “Veterans Build.” 45 fellow military men and women picked up hammers and worked on Tonya’s home for 16 hours, transforming it from a flat plywood floor, into the upright frame that you see in the photo to the right.

What an inspiration it was to watch our nation’s heroes continue to set an example of what it means to serve. Special thanks to Dan Glass, former construction staff member and war veteran (Iraq), for leading this event’s recruitment and planning, and to Cassique resident Jim Conroy for leading the fundraising efforts.
